Course: English 9
Prerequisite: English 8
This course stresses an understanding of literary forms: poems, stories, plays, essays, and novels. Integrated
with the literature, a basic approach to language stresses writing, editing, and application of usage and
grammar. CaPP Personal Development components are incorporated into the curriculum through novel
study, personal reflection and class discussion.

This course provides an extension of the various literary forms previously studied and will introduce the
element of theme. Integrated with the study of literature are writing practice and the review of usage and
grammar. Students will write a Provincial Exam at the completion of the course. This exam will be worth
20% of the student grade and will be blended with the class mark to create the final mark.

Criteria for Honours students:

Students will write a Provincial Exam at the completion of the course. This exam will be worth 20% of the

This is a language and literature course with particular emphasis on written expression. The literature
section includes study and written analysis of novels, short stories, drama, and poetry.

This course provides an alternative to regular English 11, with added course content. Students who plan to
take English Literature or those who desire a more challenging curriculum are encouraged to take this
course.

This course is designed for those students who have skill deficiencies which affect their success in English
and other courses. These students require assistance in the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. The emphasis in the course is on acquiring minimum competency in English communication skills.

Note: Either English 12 or Communications 12 is required for graduation

This course emphasizes critical appreciation of literature, including oral and written analysis of short stories,
novels, drama, essays and poetry. The Provincial Examination is worth 40% of the course mark.

This course is a continuation of Communications 11, designed for those students who have skill deficiencies
which affect their success in English and other courses. It is not acceptable for admission to university or to

This survey course examines some of the greatest works of short prose, poetry and drama produced in England from the AngloSaxon times to the late Twentieth Century. The course emphasizes traditional poetry and drama, in a variety of styles and forms. The Provincial Literature 12 Examination is worth 40% of the course mark.

To prepare nonnative speakers of English for entrance into regular stream English and other subjects.
Students will improve written and spoken communication skills and become familiar with literary and
grammatical terms used in regular English classes. Students will also be introduced to short story and novel
