Science @ Lambrick

Course: Science 9
Prerequisite: Science 8

The course, as determined by the Science 810 IRP is composed of basic topics in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, with an optional unit on Environmental Studies and Astronomy. Active participation in lab procedures and experimentation constitutes a significant part of the course. The course of study includes a study of nutrition and human physiological systems, investigation into the nature of elements and compounds and their simple reactions and an examination of the relationships among force, motion and machines.

The CaPP 9 components healthy living and family life education are addressed in Science 9 through an indepth study of human body systems including the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body.

Honours Program: Based on the recommendation by Science 8 instructors and availability of space. Topics will be an indepth study of the regular course topics, as time permits.

Course: Science 10
Prerequisite: Science 9

The course, as determined by the Science 810 IRP is composed of basic topics in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Science. It is a provincially examinable course that requires consistent effort to ensure success. The course prepares students for work at the senior levels and introduces some of the rigor of the scientific disciplines. Physics topics include electricity and magnetism. Chemistry focuses on the structure of matter, bonding and chemical reactions, while Biology concentrates on cell structure, genetics and a unit in ecology. Earth Science is an exciting section that includes earthquakes and volcanoes. Participation in lab activities is a required part of the curriculum. Science 10 students will write a formal provincial exam worth 20% of the course.

Honours Program: Based on the recommendation by Science 9 instructors and availability of space. Topics will be an indepth study of the regular course topics, as time permits

Course: Biology 11
Prerequisite: Science 10

Credits: 4 credits Foundation or Selected Studies.
The course, as determined by the Biology 11/12 IRP, focuses on biodiversity with evolution as the unifying theme. The course examines a variety of life forms and their interrelationships. The instructors have some latitude in the approaches they use to examine the major principles of biology, developing an appreciation
for the living form and an awareness of the need to share the world in a considerate and harmonious way.

Course: Biology 12
Prerequisite: Biology 11

(A minimum of a “C” letter grade in Biology is recommended.)
Credits: 4 credits Selected Studies
This provincially examinable course, as determined by the Biology 11/12 IRP, builds on the Biology 11 course and concentrates on molecular and physiological aspects of biology. Specific topics of instruction include biological chemistry, cellular biology, and mammalian physiology and anatomy. Dissections in laboratory activities form an integral part of the course.

Course: Chemistry 11
Prerequisite: Science 10

Credits: 4 credits Foundation or Selected Studies.
This course, as determined by the Chemistry 11/12 IRP, builds on the Science 10 course and provides an introduction to the theories of chemistry through the analysis and interpretation of laboratory experiments, films, and theory. The course examines a variety of important chemical concepts including atomic theory
and structure, and its relation to chemical reactions; chemical reactions and equation writing; kinetic theory; solutions and ions; physical states; the periodic table and it introduces organic chemistry.

Course: Chemistry 12 Recommended
Prerequisite: C+ in Chemistry 11 and C+ in Principles Mathematics 11 is recommended.

Credits: 4 credits Selected Studies
This provincially examinable course, as determined by the Chemistry 11/12 IRP, builds on the Chemistry 11 course and presents an introduction to physical and chemical equilibrium systems involving energyrelated changes, kinetics, solubility, oxidationreduction reactions and acidbase theories. Although the course does
not use highlevel math, it does require good mathematical problemsolving skills.

Course: Earth Science 11
Prerequisite: Science 10

Credits: 4 credits Foundation Studies
This course, as determined by the Earth Science 11 IRP, focuses on the various aspects, methods, and applications of Earth and Space Science. It is a comprehensive science course which will require students to work steadily for two terms to ensure completion, but is less demanding than the Biology 11 course. The units covered will be the Earth and its Environment, Rocks and Minerals, Weathering and Minerals, Tectonics and Earthquakes, Resources and the Environment, Oceanography, Astronomy, Atmospheric Science and the Earth’s History. Grading will be based on assignments, projects, tests and participation in
class.

Course: Human Body 12
Prerequisites: Science 10

Credits: 4
The course is intended to provide a foundation for the understanding of both the structure and the function of the human body. Activities contained in the course will provide an avenue for students for the continuing development of skills essential to informed decision making: observation, organization and analysis of
information, communication, and critical thinking. It may also serve as stimulus for further study, or to encourage students to seek careers in related fields. This course does not have a governmental exam and is less demanding than the Biology 12 examinable course.

Course: Physics 11
Prerequisite: Science 10

Credits: 4 credits Foundation or Selected Studies.
Physics 11, as determined by the Physics 11/12 IRP, is a course that deals with the various forms of energy and the laws governing the relations between these forms. It is an introductory course focusing on the fundamental actions of forces, motion, energy, light, nuclear physics and relativity. Laboratory experiments
are used to investigate phenomena related to topics such as: kinematics, motion and force, energy, electrical circuits, and light waves.

Course: Physics 12
Prerequisite: Physics 11 and Principles Mathematics 12 as a corequisite is recommended

Credits: 4 credits Selected Studies
This provincially examinable course, as determined by the Physics 11/12 IRP, builds on the Physics 11 course and is a detailed problemsolving scientific course requiring experimentation and mathematical calculation. Mechanics and dynamics are extended to include the conservation laws. Electrical and magnetic energies are introduced. In addition, the 20 th century revolution in physics is developed to include quantum theory physics and space travel. A minimum of C+ in Math 11 and C+ in Physics 11 are recommended.

Course: Science and Technology 11
Prerequisite: Science 10

Credits: 4 credits Foundation or Selected Studies.
Satisfies graduation science requirement, but not acceptable for university admission. SCT 11, as determined by the Science and Technology 11 IRP, examines how scientific knowledge and technology have helped us meet many needs (e.g. food, shelter, energy) while also creating many problems (e.g. acid rain, radioactive waste disposal). It examines the multitude of ways in which science through technology affects people, their surroundings and their world. It helps students examine the many conflicting choices present in our modern world.
